BDSM reimagined: Insights into the workshop “neuGIERIG” by GILLIAN EVENTS
The workshop – framework and atmosphere
The "neuGIERIG" workshop by GILLIAN EVENTS took place in an intimate, safe atmosphere. Dim lighting, calm music, and a lovingly prepared setting ensured that participants felt welcome from the very beginning. There was nothing reminiscent of common clichés—instead, curiosity and a pleasant openness filled the air.
Gillian, who led the workshop, opened the afternoon with a brief introduction of himself and his assistant, Kathi. From the very first minutes, he made it clear that BDSM can be approached with a touch of lightness and humor. With a tongue-in-cheek "Welcome to the workshop – torture made easy," he lightened the mood and charmingly broke the ice.
The workshop began directly with a brief introduction to the topic. Nevertheless, it was immediately apparent how important it is to treat each other with respect, and that this space was created not for shame, but for openness and genuine curiosity.
Content & Process – Learning, Feeling, Understanding
Theory and practice flowed seamlessly throughout the workshop. Gillian not only explained but also demonstrated almost everything directly using practical examples – supported by Kathi. He continually added additional tips and safety considerations, creating a lively interplay between listening, watching, and participating.
Participants were able to come forward to try out techniques for themselves or ask questions. The exchange was open and respectful – every question was taken seriously, and every uncertainty was answered patiently.
The topics ranged from signal words, dynamics, and definitions to tools and techniques used in various BDSM practices. Especially with more intense topics such as choking, breath control, bondage knots, and spanking, Gillian repeatedly emphasized the importance of knowledge, mindfulness, and communication to avoid unwanted injuries. These practices require responsibility and a precise understanding of one's own and one's partner's physical boundaries.
The group itself was diverse: predominantly couples of all ages, including a lesbian couple and a couple where the woman was blind and her partner was significantly older—providing a fascinating insight into age play—as well as a few solo women and men. This diversity made the exchange particularly lively and demonstrated how individually people live out their curiosity and passion.
Numerous accessories and toys were laid out on a prepared table, which were presented, explained, and sometimes demonstrated throughout the workshop. Those who wanted to were also welcome to try them out for themselves under supervision. The workshop concluded with a short, demonstrative spanking session—including the impressive bullwhip, which brought the workshop to a close with a palpable respect for precision and control.
Voices of the participants – between curiosity and insight
The feedback during the workshop breaks was consistently positive. Many emphasized the value of combining theory and practice so directly.
“I never would have thought that so much communication and planning went into a cathedral—it was truly impressive.”
(Participants, 34)
"The atmosphere was relaxed, respectful, and exciting at the same time. I learned that it helps to talk about definitions, but I don't have to let myself be pigeonholed."
(Participant, 42)
Whether couples, individuals, or experienced members of the scene – everyone took something with them: more knowledge, more awareness, and perhaps even a bit more self-confidence.
Reflection & Conclusion
For me as a guest listener, the workshop was a fascinating insight into a world that is often misunderstood. Instead of darkness and taboos, I found openness, mindfulness, and a great deal of mutual respect.
What became clear: BDSM is far more than pain or control—it's a game of trust, communication, and emotional intimacy. The blend of humor, knowledge, and sensitivity made the course an experience that not only enlightens but also touches.
Anyone who is willing to approach the topic with curiosity and respect can not only learn techniques in workshops like “neuGIERIG” but also gain a better understanding of themselves.
