BDSM reimagined: Insights into the "neuGIERIG" workshop by GILLIAN EVENTS
The workshop – framework and atmosphere
The "curious" workshop by GILLIAN EVENTS took place in an intimate, protected atmosphere. Subdued lighting, calming music, and a lovingly prepared setting ensured that the participants felt welcome from the very beginning. Nothing was reminiscent of common clichés – instead, curiosity and a pleasant openness filled the air.
Gillian, who led the workshop, opened the afternoon with a brief introduction of himself and his assistant, Kathi. Within the first few minutes, he made it clear that the topic of BDSM should be approached with a lighthearted and humorous touch. With a tongue-in-cheek "Welcome to the workshop – torture made easy," he loosened the atmosphere and charmingly broke the ice.
The workshop started directly with an introduction to the topic. Nevertheless, it was immediately noticeable how important respectful interaction is and that this space was created not for shame, but for openness and genuine curiosity.

Content & Process – Learning, Feeling, Understanding
Theory and practice flowed seamlessly together during the workshop. Gillian not only explained but also demonstrated almost everything directly using practical examples – supported by Kathi. He repeatedly offered supplementary information and safety aspects, creating a lively exchange between listening, observing, and participating.
Participants could approach him to try out techniques themselves or ask questions. The exchange was open and respectful – every question was taken seriously, every uncertainty answered patiently.

Thematically, the range of topics covered extended from signal words, dynamics, and definitions to tools and techniques used in various BDSM practices. Especially with more intense topics like choking, breath control, bondage knots, or spanking, Gillian repeatedly emphasized the importance of knowledge, mindfulness, and communication to avoid unwanted injuries. These practices require responsibility and a precise understanding of one's own physical limits as well as those of one's partner.
The group itself was a diverse mix: predominantly couples of all ages, including a lesbian couple and a couple where the woman was blind and her partner significantly older – which offered a fascinating glimpse into age play – as well as several single women and men. This diversity made the exchange particularly lively and demonstrated how individually people express their curiosity and passions.
A variety of accessories and toys were laid out on a prepared table, which were presented, explained, and in some cases demonstrated during the workshop. Those who wished could try them out themselves under supervision. The workshop concluded with a short, demonstrative spanking session – including the impressive use of the bull whip – which left participants with a palpable sense of respect for precision and control.
Voices of the participants – between curiosity and knowledge
The feedback during the workshop breaks was consistently positive. Many participants emphasized how valuable it was to connect theory and practice so directly.
"I never would have thought that so much communication and planning went into building a cathedral – it was truly impressive."
(Participants, 34)
"The atmosphere was relaxed, respectful and exciting at the same time. I learned that it helps to talk about definitions, but I don't have to let myself be put into a category."
(Participant, 42)
Whether couples, individuals or experienced scene members – everyone took something away: more knowledge, more awareness and perhaps also a bit more self-confidence.
Reflection & Conclusion
For me, as a guest student, the workshop was a fascinating glimpse into a world that is often misunderstood. Instead of darkness and taboos, I found openness, mindfulness, and a great deal of mutual respect.
What became clear was that BDSM means far more than pain or control – it's a game of trust, communication, and emotional intimacy. The blend of humor, knowledge, and sensitivity made the course an experience that not only educated but also deeply moved.
Those who are willing to approach the topic with curiosity and respect can not only learn techniques in workshops like "neuGIERIG" but also understand themselves a little better.
